Will All-Solid-State Batteries Rule the EV Market?
November 7, 2022
The solid-state battery is one of the most promising solutions for the future generation of batteries, with their high thermal stability making them significantly safer and longer-lasting than traditional electric vehicle batteries.
THE NEXT STEP IN EV
For some time, solid-state batteries have been seen as the next step in electric vehicle development. They are:
- lighter
- store more energy
- and are less flammable than liquid ones
Until recently, two important obstacles remained – the cost and durability of such batteries. Once these issues are effectively addressed, a new battery revolution will certainly begin in the future.
SOLID STATE VS LITHIUM-ION
Solid-State Batteries (SSBs)
use Solid electrolyte
Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs)
use Liquid electrolyte
One of the most important benefits of the Solid-State Battery is greater Safety. At high temperatures:
- Liquid electrolytes in LIBs become volatile and flammable
- Solid electrolytes in SSBs have high thermal stability, which limits the risk of fire or explosion
Additional Solid-State Battery Advantages
- They can store 50% more energy than LIBs
- Have energy density up to 10 times greater than a LIB of same size
- Last up to 10,000 cycles before noticeable degradation (LIBs last between 2,000 and 3,000 cycles)
Recently, Toyota committed to investing $13.5 billion by 2030 in developing next-generation solid-state batteries.
