The Importance of Properly Inflated Tires
Your crew is taking out the rental trucks and yours seems to be dragging. When you take on hills, your vehicle is putting in extra work just to make it up the road. Even your gas mileage is suffering as you ride to your job site.
Little did you know, driving around with improperly inflated tires can damage your vehicle in multiple ways. With proper education you can keep your fleet in excellent shape through the duration of your rental.
Proper Tire Pressure
A loss in tire pressure is a normal thing. Each month a regular tire loses one to three psi due to osmosis. For every 10 psi your tires lose, you will experience a 1.5 percent hit to your fuel economy.
When you’re driving your vehicle on these tires the irregular tire wear increases the likelihood that you’ll experience punctures in the tires. When you’re driving a flatbed rental, this loss in tire pressure can cause lasting damage and even worse, a heavy load on your bank account.
As the temperature begins to fall, tire pressure will be affected. When it’s cold outside, the pressure will drop. Staying on top of your tire pressure throughout the season will sustain the integrity of your rental trucks.
Over or Underinflated Tires
You can spot overinflated tires because they are often rigid and stiff, reducing the amount of contact with the road. This causes uneven wear on your tires. The wheels on your truck will experience greater damage by things like potholes.
Under inflated tires are easier to spot. These don’t hold their shape and are flatter to the ground, wearing down the tire tread. You will experience increased rolling resistance and lessened fuel economy in this situation.
If you’re driving a rental, check your handy handbook to see what proper pressure level is for the tires. No two tire pressure gauges are the same, so leave some margin of error. However, by checking the pressure monthly, you can return your fleet in great shape, even after months on a construction site.
