Battery Swapping Idea Isn’t Dead
August 11, 2021
A decade ago, Israeli entrepreneur Shai Agassi came up with an idea for expediting the adoption of electric vehicles – battery swapping. His idea has never quite died.
- It is currently being utilized in China
- Tesla filed a patent application, but has abandoned the idea
- New partnership (Sally/Ample) is planning 1st swapping station in New York
“Battery Swapping addresses 2 Challenges with Fast Charging:
– it slowly charges depleted batteries to minimize grid impact and battery degradation,
– and it allows for faster addition of range in EVs.”
Christopher Robinson, Lux Research

Tesla filed a patent application for battery swapping, even after abandoning the idea
